چکیده

The “lead user construct” was developed to preferentially identify commercially attractive innovation-related information developed by users of products and services. In this empirical study of user modifications to Apache web server software, we further develop and test lead user theory by studying the independent and combined effects of two key component variables. We find that one component being at the leading edge of important marketplace trends selectively identifies user-developed innovations having higher marketplace potential. We find that this and other components identify users likely to have innovated. We suggest how our findings can be applied to improve identification of lead user innovations having high commercial attractiveness. Satisfying Heterogeneous User Needs via Innovation Toolkits:

Manufacturers customarily provide only a few product variants to address the average needs of users in the major segments of markets they serve. When user needs are highly heterogeneous, this approach leaves many seriously dissatisfied. One solution is to enable users to modify products on their own using “innovation toolkits.” We explore the effectiveness of this solution in an empirical study...

CROSSROADS - Identifying Viable "Need-Solution Pairs": Problem Solving Without Problem Formulation

Problem-solving research, and formal problem-solving practice as well, begins with the assumption that a problem has been identified or formulated for solving. The problem-solving process then involves a search for a satisfactory or optimal solution to that problem. In contrast, we propose that, in informal problem solving, a need and a solution are often discovered together, and tested for via...

Satisfying Heterogeneous User Needs via Innovation Toolkits: the Case of Apache Security Software

User needs for a given product type can be quite heterogeneous. Segmenting the market and providing solutions for average user needs in each segment is a partial answer that will typically leave many dissatisfied – some seriously so. We hypothesize that providing users with “toolkits for user innovation” to enable them to more easily design customized products for themselves will increase user ...
